Look I have Google on my face!!

Me wearing it first thing in the morning
Finally had a chance to have some time with Glass today and so far it is what I expected, a fantastic beta with vague wisp of awesome you can see hiding within.

I am going to make some assumptions and assume you know what Glass is, if not Google it and you will find a tonne of content from sites such as Engadget or The Verge.

I dont think it will ever replace my phone but I dont think it was never ment to, more like it reduces the amount of times I have to look at my phone and makes taking photos and the knowledge a short tap away.

With most new form factors it does have some odd bits to it. For instance if you want to get the device to start listening to you without touching it then you have to do an exaggerated nod and I had to set it for about 40%. Mainly because people come up to me at my desk and ask me questions so I am usually looking up at them and every time I would look at them the screen would come on, which would of course distract who I was talking to as they saw it come to life. Now this meant that it was quite a high pitch I had to get to activate Glass in a way that I am going to call the "GlassNod". When you think about it though how else could you do it? Always have the mic on listenting meaning you are going through the battery every couple of hours? Nah I am fine with a silly nod as long as by doing it I gain something amazing like a great photo or directions while I am riding my bike.

Now the weirdest thing about Glass is the timeline / homescreen mainly because if you get a lot of content like emails, news and photos after a while it gets to a point where there is no use trying to go back in time through Glass to find it. An example was while in a meeting I wanted to refer back to something I saw on glass earlier in the day in the subject of an email. While scrolling back through my timeline I got to the point where I decided I would never find the email again on Glass and had to resort to getting my phone out of my pocket. The reason I say this is because Glass doesn't have apps like you would have thought, there is no Gmail app it is just a Timeline that continues back into time till the moment you first set it up. Which means you cant currently filter your timeline to just emails for example which I think would be a really nice little feature.

After a day of use I know the 5min demo that a lot of people have with Glass isn't enough to make a decision on glass. Mainly because people put it on and go "wow that is amazing!!" and start going back in the timeline. Then the inevitable happens and they ask "So what else can it do?" at which point you tell them and they go "ok" and hand them back. This is mainly a lack of understanding of the device and the fact that it is not something you look at all day and replaces a device you currently use. I mean your not exactly going to go off and play Angry Birds on them are you.

Even the day I spent with Glass isn't enough. You really need a week or more to see how you would use it and how it would fit into your life. Maybe the photos are your killer feature maybe the directions at the end of the day I think Glass is like Marmite you either love it or you hate it and I love it!

When you are out of battery it becomes a lovely necklace
