My one week with the Nokia Lumia 800

Today I finally gave up on using Nokia's latest Windows phone seven device. I just couldn't do it anymore mainly due to the screen.

Firstly you can't deny that the device is one of the most beautiful ever. The way the unibody case wraps around it with the metal strip near the camera is just gorgeous. Plus the way the glass looks like a black pool of water due to its rounded edge is lovely.

As with most Nokia devices build quality is really great and it does make you feel like this is a very unique device. However the problems start when you switch on the device for the very first time.

The reason for this is simple, Nokia have gone with a 800x480 pentile display. Personally after using an iPhone 4S for a couple of weeks and a Samsung Galaxy Nexus as my main driver this is just one of the worst displays out there (from a new device anyway). As a phone geek and gadget geek this is close to an insult, the fact that Nokia have decided to go with such a bad display on the flagship device. It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't pentile, like the Samsung GS2 which has the same resolution but without the silly pentile. What makes it worse is the fact that Windows Phone 7 just makes it look worse because it is very text heavy so you are always drawn to the lack of quality.

Overall the windows phone experience is pretty standard compared to other windows phones. I did find that the battery on the Nokia lasted quite a long time as well, but I think that is because I didn't use it as much.

Overall I would give it  a 7/10

But with a lack of apps and that darn display it really is the hardware design that is pulling this device forward.
